Have you ever felt like your headaches, jaw tension, or brain fog just won’t respond to the usual fixes? Cranial manipulation works with the subtle rhythms and mobility of the skull and connective tissue to help your nervous system settle, restore balance, and support the body’s own capacity to heal.

What Is Cranial Manipulation?

Cranial manipulation is a gentle, hands-on approach that addresses restrictions in the bones, membranes, and fluid dynamics of the skull and spine. Jeffrey Burch studied this work directly with French osteopath Alain Gehin DO, one of the field’s most respected teachers, and has spent decades refining it alongside his training in Rolfing Structural Integration and Visceral Manipulation. In addition to his studies with Alain Gehin DO, Jeffrey Burch studied cranial work in two additional venues. He studied extensively with John Upledger DO and his associates, with their very different approach to cranial work, advancing to be, first a teaching assistant, and then instructor for the Upledger Institute’s most basic class. Jeffrey also completed the first-year curriculum at the Canadian College of Osteopathy which included yet a third approach to cranial manipulation.

Rather than forcing movement, cranial manipulation listens to the body’s own subtle patterns and offers just enough support to help tissue release old holding patterns — often patterns that started long before the current symptoms ever showed up.

Who This Work Can Help

Clients seek out cranial manipulation for a range of concerns, including:

  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • TMJ pain and jaw tension
  • Head or neck trauma, including concussion history
  • Sinus congestion and pressure
  • Sleep difficulties tied to nervous system tension
  • A general sense of being “wound too tight” that other bodywork hasn’t resolved

What to Expect in a Session

Sessions are quiet and unhurried. You’ll typically stay clothed and lie comfortably while Jeffrey uses a light touch to assess and treat restrictions in the skull, spine, and surrounding tissue. Many clients describe the work as deeply relaxing, even when very little visible movement is happening — the changes tend to be felt from the inside.

Because Jeffrey draws on Rolfing, Visceral Manipulation, and Cranial Work together, sessions are tailored to what your body actually needs, not a single fixed protocol.

A Foundation of Deep Study

Jeffrey Burch is a Certified Advanced Rolfer with over almost five decades of hands-on practice. His study of cranial manipulation spans multiple schools and includes direct training with Osteopaths Alain Gehin DO, John Upledger DO, and Philipe Druelle DO, giving him a nuanced, well-rounded approach that many practitioners simply haven’t had the opportunity to develop.

If chronic tension, headaches, or old injuries have been harder to shake than they should be, cranial manipulation may be the missing piece. Contact Jeffrey to ask questions or schedule a session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cranial manipulation the same as CranioSacral Therapy? They’re related but not identical. Cranial manipulation, as Jeffrey practices it, draws heavily from the osteopathic tradition taught by Alain Gehin, and Phillipe Druelle DO, while incorporating principles from John Upledger’s CranioSacral Therapy as well. Jeffrey blends these approaches based on what each client’s body needs.

Is this treatment painful? No. Cranial manipulation is a light-touch therapy. Most clients find it deeply relaxing rather than uncomfortable.

How many sessions will I need? This varies by person and condition. Some clients notice a shift after one session; others benefit from an ongoing series, especially for longstanding or trauma-related patterns. Jeffrey will discuss a plan with you after your first visit.

Can cranial manipulation be combined with Rolfing or Visceral Manipulation? Yes — many clients benefit most from an integrated approach, and Jeffrey usually draws on all three modalities within a single session based on what your body presents.
